Preparing for General Conference

General Conference took place this weekend in the United States, but for those of us who do not have BYU TV, conference only comes to us in two weeks time (April 20 and 21st) by way of a Rebroadcast for the Africa South East Area.  I'm really looking forward to it!  I'm excited to see what our leaders have to say and teach us. I'm looking forward to receiving answers to some questions that I have floating around in my mind.  To prepare for the upcoming rebroadcast, I have put together a list of quick daily activities to do with my family.  Some should take no more than a few minutes, while others may take a little longer.  I found some great ideas at www.sugardoodle.net and in an older issue of The Friend (Sept 2012) at www.friend.lds.org.  I adapted some of the ideas to suit my family. These can be done in any order.

1.  Read about Lehi's Liahona (see 1 Nephi 16:10,28-29 & Alma 37:38-40). Think about and discuss how the words of the prophets are like a Liahona for families today.

2.  Have a family member share a picture, scripture and/or story about their favourite Biblical prophet.  (This can be done several times on different days to include each family member)

3.  Read about King Benjamin speaking to his people (see Mosiah 2:1,5,9,41).  Think about and discuss how that meeting was like general conference.

4.  Have family members share some reasons why they are looking forward to general conference.

5.  Have a family member share a picture, scripture and/or story about their favourite Book of Mormon prophet.   (This can be done several times on different days to include each family member)

6.  Sing some hymns - Follow the Prophet, We Thank Thee, O God, for a Prophet, etc.

8.  Have family members think about what gospel topics they would like to learn more about during conference.  Have them write down some questions they may have and then listen to the answers that will come.

9.  Pray for help to focus and feel the Spirit during conference.  Pray for the Church leaders who will speak.

10.  Find pictures of the prophet and apostles in the November Ensign or at www.lds.org/church/leaders and learn their names.

11.  Make/obtain a journal where you can take notes about the talks during conference.  You can find a printable conference notebook at www.lds.org/general-conference/children .

12.  Read about the righteous Nephites (see  4 Nephi 1:12-13,16).  Think about and discuss what they did when they met together.

13.  Have family members share a picture, quote and/or story about their favourite modern day prophet.   (This can be done several times on different days to include each family member).

I'm looking forward to starting these activities tomorrow night and seeing the results as we prepare for general conference. I look forward to being "taught from on high".
